Motorized Shades

Lutron shades on the lake-facing glass — automatic at sunset, quiet, and battery or hardwired.

The whole reason a lake house has a two-story wall of glass is the view, and the whole problem with a two-story wall of glass is glare, heat, and the fact that at night it becomes a mirror. Motorized shades solve all three on a schedule, without anyone reaching for a wand fifteen feet up.

You notice it when

  • The west glass drops before the afternoon glare hits the TV.
  • Bedrooms go dark at bedtime without anyone getting up.
  • The great room stops turning into a mirror after dark.

Scope

What a motorized shades project includes.

Every proposal is written for the specific house. This is the shape of it.

  • Lutron Serena and Sivoia QS, roller and honeycomb
  • Battery-powered where there is no wire, hardwired where there is
  • Astronomic timeclock so shades track sunset and sun angle year-round
  • Fabric selection for view-through versus blackout, measured on site
  • Bedroom blackout with side channels for real darkness
  • Integrated with lighting scenes and Control4 where present

Investment

Projects start at $900

Figure $900 to $2,200 per shade installed depending on size, fabric, and whether it is battery or hardwired. Large great-room walls are quoted individually.

Questions

Motorized Shades questions

Something not covered here? Call (267) 719-3598 and ask.

Battery or hardwired?

Battery for retrofits — Lutron's batteries run three to five years and the install is non-destructive. Hardwired for new construction and for very large shades, where the motor draw makes batteries impractical.

How loud are they?

Lutron's are the quietest we have installed. In a room with any background sound you generally hear the fabric moving before you hear the motor.

Can you do the two-story great room glass?

Yes. That is usually the highest-value place to put them, since those are exactly the windows nobody can reach. We measure and lift with the right equipment.
